Keynote speaker for ICHGS-2018: Professor Petros Petsimeris

The Organizing Committee of the 11th International Conference of the Hellenic Geographical Society is delighted to announce that Professor Petros Petsimeris from the University Paris 1, Pantheon - Sorbonne, will be keynoting at ICHGS-2018. Petros Petsimeris is currently Professor of Geography [Géographie physique, humaine, économique et régionale] at the University of Paris 1-Sorbonne, and Visiting Professor at the University of Barcelona. He is also a member of the Steering Committee of the International Geographical Union, Commission Urban Systems. Epistemologically he is interested in the conceptualization of urban space, urban processes and the social division of space. Methodologically he is interested in quantitative methods of analysis and representation, policy analysis and the ‘fashions’ of urban representation. He has undertaken empirical research on the processes of urbanization, regeneration, segregation and migration in Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic. This work includes detailed analyses of the social and ethnic division of space in a number of European cities. He speaks, Italian, Greek, French, English, Spanish.

He studied for his first degree in architecture at the Technical University of Turin (Politecnico), awarded in 1983. He completed his Masters degree in "Town Planning and Housing Policies", at the Technical University of Milan, in 1986. He worked as architect and planner in Turin. His Doctorate was awarded by the University of Caen, in 1988. He has been a member of the National Council of Universities (CNU) in France, Social Geography Research Group of the CNRS, the Regional Science Association, the World Society of Ekistics and the Urban Development and Quality of Life Study Group of the International Geographical Union (IGU).

The keynote's title is: "SOCIAL DIVISION OF SPACE IN THE CONTEXT OF URBAN GROWTH AND DECLINE: EUROPEAN CASE STUDIES" and will take place at the start of the formal program at 10:00 a.m. local time on Thursday, April 12, 2018.
